Digitalisation of linear motion technology

24 January 2019

If Linear Motion Technology features in your factory, it’s likely that it plays a mechanical role in your processes. But as digital technology evolves, Linear Motion Technology is set to play an increasingly important role. Bosch Rexroth explains how.

The good news is that, more and more, our Linear Motion Technology solutions will enable manufacturers to capture data, optimise processes and predict wear sooner and with greater accuracy than ever before.

“What is important is that machine manufacturers, service providers and users do not have to do any programming or integration themselves, rather simply use the integrated measuring functions in the Linear Motion Technology for their analyses”, explains Matthias Rommel, Head of Linear Motion Technology at Bosch Rexroth.

Far from being a basic mechanical technology, Linear Motion Technology is poised to transform the modern manufacturing environment. Key points in the process chain are set to change, from configuration, ordering and commissioning, to operation, diagnostics and maintenance.

This will allow maximum productivity and shorten time-to-market, with all the software tools, online services, intelligent systems and integrated sensors required in the Factory of the Future:

1. Simplified product selection and sizing, through our seamless online tools, will enable users to choose linear axes and even multi-axis systems with speed and simplicity. A digital twin will accompany the components and systems in future to provide accurate simulations.

2. An automated ordering and delivery process will mean we can receive orders, commission systems and despatch almost immediately. Order tracking will be available throughout the process.

3. All the system data will be available, so you’ll benefit from a plug-and-play commissioning process, without having to input data or correct source errors. The axis parameters will always be available, for example in the motor encoder, the integrated measuring system or the digital name plate. The relevant parameters will be transmitted to the drive system, saving time and minimising errors during start-up and maintenance.

4. In the future, during operation, key data for the machine, including temperature and vibration, will be picked up by integrated sensors and passed on to our cloud services. Machine availability, quality, efficiency, and other such key information, will flow into your OEE data in real time, so you’re always well informed – wherever you are – and able to react quickly.

5. Enhanced service and maintenance will be a key part of our future Linear Motion Technology. It will evaluate the data and tell you what maintenance, servicing and spare parts are required. The relevant spare parts will be displayed in our online shop and can be ordered in just a few clicks.

An ongoing commitment to the journey ahead

Developments in our Linear Motion Technology solutions, today and in the years to come, will enable you to increase productivity and flexibility of day-to-day operations.

Matthias Rommel summarises: “Digital selection, configuration, design, start-up and predictive maintenance, including service functions: The digital journey of Linear Motion Technology has long since begun – and it will open up monumental horizons for greater productivity over the entire life cycle."
