With the EU AI Act coming into force, Will Hiley, Head of Solutioning at Syniti, considers the opportunity it presents to businesses in the UK.

“We could easily tie ourselves up in knots about the pros and cons of the Act, but the reality is AI is only as good as the data it uses: give it biased, inaccurate data and it will give you biased, inaccurate results.

“We all know that when data quality isn’t prioritised many AI projects don’t even get off the ground and those that do risk disappointing results. In fact, a recent HFS survey found that improving operational data availability is emerging as the number one challenge in implementing AI technologies. Without a real focus on data quality and governance, AI simply won’t be able to deliver on its promise.

“So although the EU AI Act may seem like yet another regulation to comply with, that its strict rules could stifle innovation and that legal complexities could be difficult to navigate, putting your data first could actually be the opportunity you’ve been looking for to kick-start your AI project.”
