Innovative motors help the development of humanoid robots

10 July 2024

Humanoid robots are offering increasingly-promising solutions to manufacturing companies that can calculate the ROI (Return on Investment) with improved productivity, product quality, and employee satisfaction.

This potential market value is a compelling reason why it’s so important to continually improve the performance of humanoid robots - whilst reducing their costs.

This whole approach centres on automating some physically-demanding, repetitive and precise (dull) tasks, something for which is becoming increasingly hard to find reliable workers. This is a key reason why the global market value for humanoid robots is projected to grow from mid-spec of $10 billion today, to around $38 billion by 2035 (Source: GSR).

Helping hands
Engineers are also grappling with a significant challenge in the field of robotics: creating robot hands that match the strength and dexterity of human hands. Currently, the dexterous hands available in the industry are a far cry from the capabilities of the human hand. While achieving the same level of performance is currently impossible, companies such as MOONS' Industries are helping to push the boundaries of robotics, focusing on increasing degrees of freedom (DOFs) and improving precision, force, and dexterity.

Motions and drives play key role
As a motions and drives specialist, MOONS’ Industries is heavily involved and committed to the robotics and automation segment, with some of the most advanced dextrous hands using its products. For example, its super-hollow shaft stepper motors can make a significant difference to the complexity of today's robot articulation challenges.

Due to its collaborations around the world, MOONS' Industries will release several new products through 2024 which will help its customers to meet and stay ahead of the technical challenges required to keep advancing the humanoid robot development curve.

Motors
The need for innovative actuation solutions that can deliver exceptional torque density and seamless integration has never been greater and this is why MOONS’ has developed a range of slotless and coreless motors which offer the combination of high torque, low noise, and a lack of cogging in an ultra-compact package.

The result is smoother and precise high-speed and low-speed operation which helps to optimise control and improve robotic efficiency. In addition, its robotic joints with harmonic gears and full range of frameless BLDC motors offer competitive solutions to the challenges that have made producing a general-purpose human-robot cost-prohibitive up until now.
