ABB to support Hvaler Kommune in minimising water leakage and improve operational efficiency
06 July 2020
ABB has signed an extension to the existing service contract with Hvaler Kommune, a municipality that is part of a group of islands in the southern part of Norway, to provide cutting-edge digital services.
This will empower better use of the utility’s operational data, automate processes, improve overall performance and environmental sustainability, and ultimately support Hvaler Kommune in reducing water leakage.
ABB has deployed its digital data streaming service, ABB Ability EdgeInsight as part of its Collaborative Operations approach. The data stream is transmitted, safely, right from the heart of the control system, without any sort of filtering or intermediate storage in databases.
Hvaler Kommune will be able to work with data on operational optimisation, in a far more efficient way, with live, high-quality data collected directly from the source. Operators will be able to transfer this data into real-time insights, driving efficiency and more effective management its water and wastewater services.
Thor Egil Kingell, Lead of Digitalisation for Hvaler Kommune added: “With the new streaming solution from ABB, we are closing the gap between our operational system and the cloud in a safe and sustainable way. This enables innovation from ABB, but also from our other vendors as well. It is an exciting time for Hvaler Kommune and we are glad to have ABB onboard.”
ABB is committed to promoting more responsible & sustainable use of water by offering integrated solutions for the water cycle that optimise operations and improve quality of treated water to reduce environmental impact.
Per Erik Holsten, head of ABB Energy Industries for Northern Europe said: “The deployment of our digital solution marks a technological breakthrough for what has been a traditionally conservative water industry model in Norway.
“Hvaler Kommune, which is an especially beautiful area, has a forward-thinking approach with ambitions to deliver wide-ranging digitisation and a smart-city infrastructure. We hope that this project will act as a blueprint for future, successful collaborations.”
The unique streaming solution has been pioneered by ABB in Norway and was first commercially applied in the offshore oil and gas earlier this year at OKEA’s Draugen Platform. ABB is now looking at where and how it can apply this technology in other markets throughout Northern Europe.
